Meta tags, are embedded in the HTML code of a web page. Their function is to provide information about a document and about a document's content. Search engines use this information to categorise, prioritise and rank websites.

The description tag is the line of text we use to describe what the page or site is about, and in many search engines the title and meta description are what gets displayed in the search results, so it is very important to pay a good deal of attention to this tag.
